Aesthetic Injection of Kybella® (Deoxycholic Acid)

What is Kybella®?

Kybella® (deoxycholic acid) is a manmade form of a substance made in the body which helps absorb fats. Deoxycholic acid works by destroying fat cells where it is injected into the body. It is used to help decrease the appearance of fat below the chin (submental fat), sometimes called a double-chin. It has not yet been approved for safe use on other areas of the body.

What is the treatment like?

Kybella® is injected into the fat under the chin in an evenly-spaced grid. Your healthcare provider will decide how many treatments and injections are needed, and treatments must be given at least one month apart. Multiple treatments are usually indicated and each treatment typically take 30 minutes or less. First the skin is cleansed, then your provider will mark the injection sites and determine how much product is needed for the injections. The treatment area is iced during and after injections to minimize discomfort. Most patients will have minimal discomfort with the injections and a mild burning sensation may be experienced shortly after each injection. After the treatment, expect swelling and possible numbness in the area for up to 6 weeks. There is no downtime, but there is a possibility that swelling can be significant for several days after treatment.

Are there any possible side effects?

The most common side effects from Kybella® treatment include mild pain, swelling, irritation, bruising, and temporary numbness.  Though rare, there is a potential for more serious complications which can be discussed with your provider.

Are there any contraindications?

You should not use Kybella® if you are allergic to deoxycholic acid, or if you have an infection in or around the area to be treated. To make sure Kybella® is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

  • A history of surgery or other cosmetic treatments on your neck, chin, or face (or if you plan to have surgery on any of these areas)
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Swollen lymph glands in your neck
  • A bleeding or blood clotting disorder such as hemophilia
  • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant in the near future
