Easy spring beauty: Beautiful skin and fun pops of color
by Bree Coven Foster for The Seattle Times
Spring is a time for renewal and fresh color — in your beauty routine.
With dewy, warming weather in mind, we’ve rounded up some beauty and makeup products to achieve a glowing, natural look, plus some on-trend pops of color to help you bloom. Here’s looking at you, sunshine.
SPRING CLEAN
Your skin needs spring cleaning, too, so start with a fresh canvas. The new Julep Love Your Bare Face Detoxifying Cleansing Stick ($28 at Julep salons and julep.com), from the Seattle company, contains pomegranate fruit enzymes to gently exfoliate and brighten dry winter skin in convenient stick form.
Add intense hydration with Pevonia’s Power Repair Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream ($81 at pevonia.com), a 2015 best seller that soothes sensitive skin and serves as the smoothing base under makeup.
To soften lips, repair cracked heels and more, add all-purpose Doctor Rogers Restore Healing Balm ($30 at doctorrogers.com) to your spring skin-care kit. Launched in February by Seattle dermatologist Dr. Heather D. Rogers, Restore is the first petroleum-free, allergen-free ointment made from 100 percent plant-based ingredients. It works anywhere you’d use Vaseline, and even blends with eye shadow and mineral makeup to create an on-trend glossy look.
GET GLOWING
Add a little color back to your skin with Paula’s Choice Skincare SUN 365 Self-Tanning Concentrate ($18 at paulaschoice.com). The Seattle company’s lightweight self-tanning concentrate can be added to your own moisturizer for a healthy-looking tan without the sun.
Achieve a dewy, radiant look with Perfekt Liquid Gold Illuminating Perfector ($28.50 at Ulta, Sephora and perfektbeauty.com). The body “glotion” contains organic botanical extracts and light-reflecting pearls that obscure imperfections and impart a luminous glow. The multitasker can be used on body, face and hair for subtle shimmer.
Keep that fresh-from-the-shower look all day long with Herbivore Botanicals’ Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist ($32 Lucca Great Finds, Ballard, and herbivorebotanicals.com), a light, refreshing coconut-water-based spray made in Seattle from all-natural vegan ingredients.
GO NUDE
Natural-looking, no-makeup makeup always works for spring. Nudestix Lip/Cheek Pencils ($24 each at beautylish.com) provide soft color for lips and cheeks with a creamy formula made with shea butter and vitamin E. And they come with their own sharpener and mirror for added convenience.
Make Up For Ever’s Artist Shadow Eyeshadow and Powder Blush in iridescent Pinky Beige ($21 at Sephora) is another multitasker. Use it as a shadow or brush the gel-powder formula across your cheekbones and brow bone for an alluring glow.
Full, natural brows are all the rage. Groom and fill yours quickly and easily with Glossier Boy Brow ($16 at glossier.com), a tinted grooming pomade. Then, replace your mascara with Milk Makeup’s Weekend Lash Stain ($22 at Sephora and milkmakeup.com) and wake up with perfect lashes for two days. The waterproof lash conditioner and color holds up through the shower, the pool and warm weather.
Finish your natural look with the new Herbivore Botanicals Coco Rose Lip Polish ($18 at Lucca Great Finds and herbivorebotanicals.com), which softens and smoothes lips with a universally flattering pale pink tint.
ADD COLOR
Spring fashion-forward with bright pops of color in vivid floral hues. Julep’s It’s Balm Lip Crayon ($20 at julep.com) comes in fresh, feminine hues, with moisturizing vitamin E and botanical extracts to keep the color going strong all day.
MDM Flow Lipstick ($18 at nastygal.com) is a new line of highly-saturated lip colors inspired by hip-hop culture. Try on the pale purple Milkshake shade, which contains encapsulated pigments that make the color get brighter as you rub your lips together.
If you prefer to emphasize your eyes, pick up MAC’s Flamingo Park Eye Shadow X 9 ($32), which lets you play with nine vivid colors. Or go for the hottest shadow trend of the season — a blue smoky eye — with MAC Mineralize Eye Shadow in Blue Flame ($22, both at Nordstrom and maccosmetics.com). Apply it dry for a light, sheer metallic blue, or wet for deep, intense color.
